Bukit Lawang is located 120 km north-west of Medan in Sumatra, Indonesia. The easiest way to get here is to fly into Kuala Namu International Airport (KNO). From KNO or Medan City, it's about a 3-5 hour drive to Bukit Lawang.

How to get to Bukit Lawang

Orange ALS bus from Kuala Namu Airport in Medan to Bukit Lawang

Public transport

From Kuala Namu Airport (KNO)

Take the orange ALS bus to Binjai. The journey will take approx. 2 hours and costs 60.000 IDR. In Binjai take the orange PS bus (from Binjai Supermall or Tanah Lapang Binjai terminal) to the busstation of Gotong Royong, a small village just outside of Bukit Lawang. This will take around 3 hours and costs 30.000-50.000 IDR. Make sure to reach Binjai before 5 pm since the last local bus sometimes leaves at this time!

You can also take the red Almasar bus to Medan. This is an airconditioned bus with a little more comfort. In Medan you transfer to a different bus from the same company. The journey will take around 5 hours in total and costs approx. 90.000 IDR.

Red Almasar public bus to Bukit Lawang

From Medan city

Start from Terminal Pinang Baris or Mawar Bakery. Take the red Almasar bus to Gotong Royong busstation. You can also take the orange PS bus. Both journeys will take approx. 4-5 hours and cost 50.000 IDR.

Another option is to take the red Almasar bus from Terminal Amplas. The journey to Gotong Royong busstation will take around 4 hours and costs 50.000 IDR. Terminal Amplas is known for its maffia though, so watch out! Only pay directly to the driver!

Once you arrive in Gotong Royong busstation, you can take a becak to Bukit Lawang for 20.000 IDR and walk to your guesthouse. If you’re traveling solo, we’ll pick you up from the busstation by motorbike and bring you and your luggage to your guesthouse!

Tourist bus from KNO

A budget option with a bit more comfort is the tourist bus from Kuala Namu airport. This is a shared car with 6 seats. The tourist bus runs from 8 am to 4 pm. You can be asked to wait for other travelers, if they arrive after you. The journey to Gotong Royong busstation will take approx. 4-5 hours and costs 210.000 IDR per person.


Once you arrive in Gotong Royong busstation, you can take a becak to Bukit Lawang for 20.000 IDR and walk to your guesthouse. If you’re traveling solo, we’ll pick you up from the busstation by motorbike and bring you and your luggage to your guesthouse!

Private car

The fastest and most comfortable option to get to Bukit Lawang is a private car with airconditioning for max. 4 people and luggage*. We can organize a pick up from Kuala Namu airport or your accommodation in Medan city and drop you off at your guesthouse in Bukit Lawang. The journey will take approx. 4-5 hours and costs 700.000 IDR per car for max. 4 people + luggage.
